Chillán is a city and commune in central Chile, serving as the capital of the Ñuble Region. Located in the fertile Central Valley, it is known as the “cradle of the Patria” and the “cradle of the Artists”. Chillán is a commercial hub for the surrounding agricultural region and features both modern and historic attractions.
Location:
In the central south of Chile, approximately 400 km (249 mi) south of Santiago.
History:
Founded in 1580, originally named San Bartolomé de Chillán.
Attractions:
Chillán Market, a multi-block open-air farmers’ market; Laguna del Laja National Park and Nevados de Chillán for skiing, hiking, and hot springs; Termas de Chillán thermal resort and ski center; and the Chillán Viejo, the birthplace of Bernardo O’Higgins.
Climate:
Chillán has clearly identified climatic characteristics of central Chile. It has a temperate Mediterranean climate with a similar dry and rainy season, with a continental or continentalized Mediterranean influence. The hottest month is January, with average temperatures of 20.1°C. The absolute maximum temperatures are recorded in the middle of the month, reaching values of up to 38°C in the shade. The coldest month is July, with temperatures ranging between 1°C and 5°C. Among the most significant absolute minimum temperatures are also recorded in July, with temperatures as low as -7°C. Rainfall is approximately 1,058 mm per year.
